Weeks 8 – 11 have been rough, like really rough. I found out we were pregnant around week 6, we told our family and friends around week 7, and the nausea started at week 8. Oh the nausea.
Call it naive, or as I like to say – hopeful, but I always thought that I would have a super smooth pregnancy and not experience the nausea or sickness that plagues most pregnant women. I would think to myself, “you’re healthy, you’re strong, you climb mountains, you never get sick, you’re average height & weight, you got this! Pregnancy is going to be a breeze.” Clearly, I’m an idiot to think that I could be immune to what torments 90% of expectant mothers… If that doesn’t bring ya down a peg, I don’t know what would 🙂
For the past 4 weeks, I’ve experiences nausea all day every day. It’s such a delight. Here’s a list of things that are better than nausea:
- Burning leg muscles when you reach 13,000 ft on Mt. Rainier and realize you still have 1,400 more feet to go
- Getting kicked in the head with a soccer ball
- Taking a baseball to the shin
- Self arresting in a mixture of hard snow and ice
- Whiplash
- Being tickled by someone stronger than you
- Getting lemon juice on a cut you didn’t know you had
- Finding a great parking space but then realizing that you won’t fit
- Opening a pack of Starburst and getting all lemons
- People who don’t use turning signals
A friend told me that she experienced nausea and realized that this was God’s way of giving new parents 9 months to prepare for a having child. I carry around snacks with me everywhere, run out of breath, deal with crying (I cry pretty easily apparently), make frequent trips to the bathroom, and get tired. All things that I will also be doing with a child! So if you see me walking around with a bag of pretzels or wiping away tears – it’s cool, I’ll be alright.
The up side to all of this is last week we had our first ultrasound appointment! They gave us sooooo much information on babies that it was definitely a bit nerve wrecking, told us about potential hazards and diseases, tested my blood, and reviewed my body stats. Apparently – I’m immune to German measles (who knew), am the perfect weight for my height, and have one super active baby with an extremely strong heart beat! The baby was moving around so much they couldn’t get a good measure of it, so I have to get another ultrasound tomorrow to make sure I really am 11 1/2 weeks along. Let’s hope I am because the nausea is supposed to subside around week 12 or 13 and the fact that I’m almost there is brightening my days.
Upside #1 – 1 baby! I was super nervous it would be twins because my grandmother had 3 sets of twins. HUGE thanks to God for helping us dodge that bullet
Upside #2 – The baby’s heartbeat is strong and my body is healthy.
Upside #3 – This is a selfish upside, but I haven’t gained any weight yet! Don’t worry – I’m not supposed to for a few more weeks anyways. Then it’ll be grow, grow, grow!
*I think the baby looks like a tiny dinosaur blob. Brice just thinks blob*
